How to become DBA

What is  DBA:
A database administrator (DBA) directs or performs all activities related to maintaining a successful database environment. 
A DBA makes sure that databases have the following qualities:
  • Data remains consistent across the database;
  • Users access data concurrently, in a form that suits their needs;
  • Establishing policies and procedures pertaining to the management, security,  maintenance, and use of the database management system;
Responsibilities:
  •  Installing and upgrading the database server.
  •  Allocating system storage and planning future storage requirements for the database  system
  •  Modifying the database structure, as necessary, from information given by application  developers
  •  Enrolling users and maintaining system security
  •  Ensuring compliance with database vendor license agreement
  •  Controlling and monitoring user access to the database
  •  Monitoring and optimizing the performance of the database
  •  Planning for backup and recovery of database information
  •  Maintaining archived data
  •  Backing up and restoring databases
  •  Contacting database vendor for technical support
  •  Generating various reports by querying from database as per need
  •  Managing and monitoring data replication
Because of the increasing levels of hacking and the sensitive nature of data stored, security and disaster recovery have become increasingly important aspects of the work.

Why DBA:
Even as companies cut other jobs, including some IT positions, DBAs can expect job security.  Because job duties are so complex and positions are hard to fill, most companies prefer to retain the DBAs they have rather than seek new talent

Scope :
If you want a stable job that pays well, this is one of the best fields to go into for a career.As a tech field, it offers many of the challenges and an identical scope for personal improvement to what is typical in the industry.As companies grow and expand, the need for DBAs has also risen. This gives DBAs more flexibility in the field they choose, as well as making it more of a job hunter’s market because DBAs are in high demand, and will continue to be so. 

Working Hours: 
Most of the setup are 24/7 , need to works in shifts.A major downside of being a DBA is the hours, as well as the stress of always putting out fires, like a database failure or application is not working. 
DBAs were often expected to be on call 24/7—even on Christmas day or two in the morning on a Saturday, leading to DBA burnout.
With Remote DBA services, organizations can offload the tedious and stressful aspects of a DBA’s duties, leading to greater job satisfaction and a reduction in turnover.

Salary :
Database Admin can expect salary between $90000-$150000 (yearly)
Junior DBA       : $40000-$60000
Mid Level DBA : $60000-$90000
Senior DBA       : $90000-$130000
Approximate:-
  • Add 6% for ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) Skills
  • Add 6% for Oracle Database Skills
  • Add 7% for Hadoop Skills
  • Add 8% for MS SQL Server Database Skills

Who can become DBA:
Database administration positions typically require at least a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology /Computer Science. 
For others field, He/she should have knowledge of Database.

Pros & Cons:-

Pros:
  • Job is more secure than other IT field.
  • It is possible to work from home or and have flexible timings (Depends on project policy).
  • This field provide Excellent Pay.
Cons:
  • Being a Database Administrator could be quite stressful as they handle an organization’s sensitive information and data. They may be held responsible for sensitive and confidential data/information leakage
  • Less personal life as need to provide 24/7 support ,on call support Even during Diwali , Christmas etc.
  • Most of planned activities scheduled on weekends to make sure less business user impact.
